Île-de-France is the most populous and most densely populated region of metropolitan France. Centred on Paris, it concentrates nearly one fifth of the French population on barely 2% of the national territory.

The Palace of Versailles, Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, the Palace of Fontainebleau and the Basilica of Saint-Denis are among the many UNESCO World Heritage sites located within the regional territory.
